A 25-year-old man was killed and five others grievously injured when the car they were travelling in hit a tree in Tughlaq Road in New Delhi district early on Sunday morning.
The police said the driver of the car was drunk at the time of the accident.
According to the police, Sachin Kumar, a chauffer by profession, took his employer's his employer's Ambassador without informing him. The owner of the car, Julian Parr, is a resident of the United Kingdom, was in Kolkata when the incident happened.
The police said the accident occurred at 2am near Sunheri Masjid, close to Union defence minister AK Antony's residence, on Krishna Menon Marg. The Ambassador, which has apparently been on a world trip, was badly damaged in the accident.
All the victims, including Kumar, were in an inebriated state, said the police. They were returning home after attending their friend's wedding in Palam.
The police said that the deceased was identified as Ravi Verma. Verma, and the other injured persons — Ankit Kumar, Rajesh Kumar, Sachin Singh and Pappu — were Kumar's friends.
“One of the victims told us that Kumar lost control of the car trying to avoid colliding with a truck but rammed into the tree. The impact was such that all of them were injured. They were immediately taken to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, where the doctors declared Verma dead on arrival," said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
"While the condition of three was critical, two were discharged after preliminary medical treatment," he added.
The police have registered a case and impounded the car. They have also arrested Kumar in the matter.
