The Body of a young married woman was found hanging at her north-west Delhi home on Wednesday afternoon, a day after her first marriage anniversary.

Police said they recovered a suicide note apparently written by the woman, which stated that she was upset due to dowry harassment.

An officer said 25-year-old Astha Jain lived with her husband Amit Jain, a businessman and his parents at their house in Block FIU, Pitampura.

Amit’s family is financially well off, police said, adding that he and his father run a steel business. Astha’s father Ashok Jain owns a paper business in Chawri Bazar.

Ashok Jain has told the police that his daughter often complained of dowry harassment.

The allegations could not be confirmed immediately, and neither Amit nor his family members could be contacted for comments.

A police officer said the suicide note blames Astha’s mother-in-law for all her troubles. “The note states she was often taunted and her parents asked to arrange money on a regular basis. The suicide note just blames Astha’s mother-in-law for this harassment,” said an officer.

Maneesh Agrawal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (northwest), said that the magistrate recorded the statements of the accused and then a case was registered against.

Astha’s parents have said they spent over a crore of rupees in Astha’s marriage, including a Mercedes car they gifted to Amit, said an officer.

“Astha’s family has also alleged that they gave Rs 35 lakh to Astha’s in-laws a few months back, following repeated demands and harassment,” said an officer.

Astha’s brother, told journalists that her in-laws did not allow them to speak to her on Tuesday.

“My sister had made several complaints that her husband and mother-in-law are demanding large sum of money. They even physically assaulted her,” he said.
