A 28-year-old man was crushed to death and two others were injured when a high-speed Toyota Fortuner rammed a cab near Iffco chowk on Tuesday morning.
The SUV with a Rajasthan number (RJ 13 UC 1111) rammed the cab, a Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, crushing the passenger to death besides injuring the driver. It hit a divider, injuring a garbage collector.
Police identified the deceased as Ajay Parashar, who worked at a private school in Sector 53.
The injured, Gautam, the cab driver and, Harcharan, garbage collector, are undergoing treatment at Delhi’s Safdarjung hospital, police said.
The accident took place at 7.30am on Tuesday when Ajay was on his way to office from his residence in Delhi’s Mahipalpur in the cab.
Ajay, a resident of Agra in Uttar Pradesh, was declared brought dead at the hospital. The unknown driver of the SUV fled from the spot leaving the vehicle at the accident site.
Based on Ajay’s friend, Shyam Sunder’s complaint, a case was lodged against unknown driver of the SUV under sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life) and 304 A (causing death due to negligence) of Indian Penal Code at DLF Phase 2 police station.
“The driver fled from the spot. We have seized the vehicle and are trying to trace the owner,” said assistant sub-inspector, Devender, the investigation officer. The silver SUV is registered at Sri Gandhadhar Nagar in Rajasthan.
Such cases of SUVs involved in accidents have been on the rise. On September 5, a 27-year-old man was crushed to death and his relative injured when the motorcycle on which they were travelling was hit by a high-speed Toyota Fortuner on Gurgaon-Faridabad road.
On June 13, an 81-year-old ailing woman was killed when the ambulance in which she was being escorted towards a hospital collided with a speeding Toyota Fortuner near Huda City Metro Station. The driver fled from the spot after the accident.
In a separate accident, a 25-year-old gardener, Shyamu, was mowed down by an unknown vehicle near Gwal Pahari when he was crossing the road at 9pm on Tuesday. A case of rash driving and death due to negligence was lodged against the unknown driver of a car at DLF Phase-1 police station, police said.
