Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south), on Tuesday said an intensive, three-day tenant verification drive and a distinct crew-cut hairstyle of the accused led investigators to the trio.

Investigators found Rohan Chauhan lived on rent in Munirka village. Sharma said, "The accused Chauhan brothers were arrested from a relative's residence at Dakshinpuri in Ambedkar Nagar on Monday evening. They were planning to flee Delhi to evade arrest. Later, Monu was arrested from Dilshad Garden."

Police said the Chauhan brothers shot Tokas, a former Central Reserve Police Force officer, at the Baba Ganganath Sports Complex, at 12.05am to avenge the insult to Mohit, whom Tokas had slapped about 35 minutes earlier. Monu was only accompanying the siblings, police added.

Police said during questioning, the trio revealed that on Thursday night, Mohit and Monu had gone to the sports complex for a walk after dinner. Tokas confronted them when they were sitting on an iron swing. After an argument, Tokas allegedly swore at the duo and finally slapped Mohit.

Sharma said, "An enraged Mohit, who was visiting his brother Rohan, and staying at his rented residence in the village, narrated the incident to his elder brother. Later, Rohan and Mohit, armed with two pistols, along with Monu reached the sports complex and shot Tokas."

During investigations in the case, the local police verified at least 800 tenants in Munirka village. A sketch of one of the accused, based on descriptions provided by witnesses, was also made in addition to conducting enquiries at the barber shops in the area.

"On the basis of the tenants' list at Vasant Vihar police station, it was found that a tenant, Rohan, had left the house early on Friday by telling his landlord that he had to visit his ailing sister. After this, several raids were conducted at Dehradun, Saharanpur, Bulandshahar and Hapur, before we traced the accused brothers to Ambedkar Nagar," Sharma added.
