A 32-year-old 'tantrik' was arrested for allegedly cheating people of their cash and jewellery, police said today.
Sahab Alam was apprehended from Old Mustfabad recently following investigations into a complaint filed by a woman that she was cheated of Rs 37,000 and her jewellery, a senior police official said.
She claimed that Alam duped her on the pretext of solving her problems. The woman had watched a cable TV advertisement of Chand Bhai Shah claiming to solve problems. When she met him, he gave her a small packet and told her to put it under her pillow while sleeping and meet him after three days.
When she reached his office after three days, he predicted that her problems must have continued and that he had to perform three poojas. “He impressed her by igniting fire from a pot. He took R20,000 from her and asked her to again come to his office after three days with jewellery. When she reached his office with gold, he put the jewellery into a small pot, tied it with a red piece of cloth and returned it to her and again took R17,000 from her," the official said.
The official said after two days, he called her and told her that someone from her family is going to die and directed her to put all her gold in that pot.
After a few days he gave her a packet which he claimed contained the jewellery and directed her to open it only on his next direction on phone. When she did not received any call, she tried to contact him, but his phone was switched off.
On getting suspicious, she opened the packet and found pebbles and some flowers.
