A 37-year-old US national attempted to commit suicide by jumping from the departure ramp of the Indira Gandhi International Airport's Terminal 3 (T3) on Thursday morning, police said.
"Redmon Tyrone tried to jump from the departure ramp at the T3 as he was upset over being spurned in love. It was only after about three hours of persuasion that he was stopped and taken into custody," said a senior police officer.
According to police, Tyrone, along with an NRI friend Nilesh Patel, had come to Delhi with a multiple entry visa on February 2.
"He and Patel went to Vadodara and after staying there for about a week they returned to Delhi on February 8. He had to board a Virgin Altantic flight to US via London scheduled to depart at 1.30 pm on Friday but since he reported at around 12.30 pm at the airline counter, he was denied a boarding pass," the officer said.
Police said Tyrone, whose luggage was mistakenly travelling in Patel’s name, spent the entire night at the airport’s waiting lounge.
"He was frustrated and as soon as he got the chance this morning, he rushed out of the departure gate no 8 and attempted to jump from the ramp," said RA Sanjeev, deputy commissioner of police (IGIA).
According to police, Tyrone was persuaded to get off the ramp and taken to the police station for questioning in the presence of the US embassy staff.
"Patel has been contacted and asked about the entire episode. We have found differences in their versions. We have asked him to come to Delhi. Meanwhile, a case of attempt to suicide under section 309 of IPC has been registered against Tyrone," said a senior police officer.
