Four people were arrested for alleged involvement in a betting syndicate operating during the recent one-day international played between and in Delhi , the Crime Branch said on Tuesday.
Ashok Chand, deputy commissioner of police (crime) said that the racket, busted in outer Delhi ’s Budh Vihar area, had already received bets to the tune of Rs 1.35 crore. The arrested have been identified as Deepak Mukhija, 39, Punit Madan, 29, Pramod Jain, 44 and Sunil Kumar, 33.
“There was information that bets are being placed on the cricket match being played at the Ferozshah Kotla Ground on October 17, which was between India and England. This information was further developed and while the cricket match was on, after observing all codal and legal formalities, a raid was conducted,” said DCP Chand.
According to the police, while Mukhija, Madan and Kumar are property dealers operating from Rani Bagh, Jain runs a sports equipment shop in the same area. The rate of the odds between the two cricket teams, police said, had originated outside and it was on the basis of this rate that the bets were taken during the match.
Two laptops, a TV and 27 mobile phones were recovered from the raided premises,” DCP Chand added.
