Five schoolkids suffered serious injuries when a speeding SUV rammed into a school van near INA Metro station in Sarojini Nagar on Tuesday.

The school van was carrying 11 students of the Air Force Senior Secondary School, Race Course Road, when the accident occurred around 1.15pm.

“People present near from the Metro station rescued the kids from the van. The SUV driver, responsible for the accident, began abusing the van driver and slapped him twice,” said Harikesh Singh, an eyewitness.

Five kids were hurt in the accident. While three of them were admitted to Safdarjung Hospital, two were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre.

Divyam (10), Manish (8), Yash (7) and Gagandeep (10) were discharged after the treatment. Kamaljeet (16) will undergo an operation for serious injuries to her right hand.

The police have arrested the Scorpio driver, identified as Sunil Dhankar (28). “Dhankar claims to be a former reporter with a Hindi news channel. We have registered a case against him,” said a senior police officer. Tarun Singh, driver of the school van, said, “Even though he was at fault, the SUV driver was rude and did not help us.”
