A six-year-old boy died after falling into an uncovered manhole in Usmanpur area in northeast Delhi on Saturday evening.
The boy, identified as Mohammad Faisal, was playing with his friends when he slipped into the open drain.
The incident took place at 7 p.m. Faisal’s friend raised alarm and locals rushed to the spot. Locals said the manhole was left open by the civic body, which led to the incident.
“It is the responsibility of the agency which is maintaining the manhole to take care of the cover,” said a resident of Usmanpur.
A call was made to fire brigade at 7.20 p.m. “During that time few locals jumped into the sewer but could not find his body. Almost an hour later his body was recovered from a nearby gutter,” said a senior police officer.
According to the police, Faisal’s father works in a factory. The body has been sent for the postmortem examination whose report is awaited.
“We are trying to find out who was maintaining the manhole. The case of causing death due to negligence will be registered against the civic body,” the officer further said.
Further investigations are on in the case.
