A 60-year-old man, who was into an alleged illegal relationship with his 35-year-old married niece, was shot dead by two unidentified bikers at Vijay Nagar area of Ghaziabad on Friday evening.

His niece, who was with him at the time, also suffered critical injuries as a result of the assault.

Police said the incident occurred around 6pm when Mahesh Soni and his niece were headed for their Sector 9 house in Vijaynagar. The two shot by two unidentified bikers with a .315 calibre country-made weapon, police said.

"The man was rushed to MMG hospital where he was declared dead while the woman suffered bullet injuries over her chest area," superintendent of police (SP) JK Shahi told Hindustan Times.

The SP said the reason behind the shooting was the alleged illegal affair between Soni and his niece, who lived together in Vijaynagar along with another woman's husband.

"A year ago the woman was shot at by the victim's son over her illegal relationship with his father. The victim was actively pursuing the attempt-to-murder case against his own son and was returning along with the woman after hearing of the same case at Ghaziabad court," the SP said.

Soni worked at a government undertaking in Ghaziabad and had filed a divorce from his wife in a court in Delhi. Soni's wife is reported to be a central-government employee and based in Delhi.

"This illegal relationship led to the shooting incident. The woman told us that the two assailants were friends of Soni's son. The victim had also transferred all his property in the name of his niece which was also a bone of contention," the SP added.

Police said the woman's condition was critical and she was referred to Yashoda Hospital.
