The 67-year-old wife of a retired railway employee was dragged on the road and robbed of jewellery worth R1 lakh by four motorcycle-borne men in north Delhi’s Roop Nagar on Friday morning.
According to police, the incident took place around 7.30am when Madhu Mansha Ramani had gone to a nearby temple for morning prayers.
Sindhu Pillai, the deputy commissioner (north), said Ramani had left her Roop Nagar home around 7am to visit the nearby Sadhubela temple.
“We have registered a case in connection with the incident at the Roop Nagar police station and are looking for the culprits,” said Pillai.
Another senior police officer said, “As soon as she was near the temple, four men on two motorcycles swooped down and overpowered the elderly woman. They asked her to give them her jewellery and cash, but she refused. They then tried to use force and dragged her on the road for some distance. They snatched her gold chain and bangles and sped away.”
After the men disappeared from the spot, the senior officer said, the woman raised an alarm. Hearing her screams, a home guard who was passing the area stopped and took her home.
“She called the police control room from her home. A police team recorded her statement. The woman told us that she did not see the faces of the assailants since they were wearing helmets,” said the officer, adding they are questioning some local criminals in Roop Nagar area.
