In another incident of crime against senior citizens, a 70-year-old woman was found killed in her Rohini Sector 8 house on Wednesday evening. The victim, identified as Gurjeet Kaur, used to live alone and had retired as an assistant commissioner from the income tax department.
It was Kaur's domestic help who discovered her body when she arrived at the house around 4.15pm, and then reported the matter to police. "Kaur's hands and legs were tied with a rope and her mouth had been taped shut. The cause of death could be strangulation or suffocation," a senior police officer said, on the condition of anonymity. There were strangulation marks on her neck.
The entry into the house was friendly though the assailants seemed to have ransacked the house after killing her.
Kaur's husband had died years ago, while her two daughters were married. Her only son used to stay abroad. "We have collected fingerprints from the house and are taking the neighbours' statements," the officer further said. Police have also prepared a list of domestic helps who had worked with the victim earlier.
The domestic help, who discovered the body, has also been questioned. In her statement, she said that she had found the main door opened and Kaur's body was lying in the bedroom. She also gave the police the details of a few relatives who had visited Kaur in the past one week.
"We cannot rule out the involvement of someone who was well aware of Kaur's routine. She used to keep a low profile," the officer added.
Kaur was rushed to a nearby hospital where the doctors declared her brought dead. Police said that there was a possibility that the robbers tied her after she tried to raise an alarm and she died of suffocation. A case of murder has been registered at the Rohini police station and further investigations are on.
