An 83-year-old woman was taken hostage and robbed of the jewellery she was wearing at her home in west Delhi's Rajouri Garden on Thursday morning.
Police said the robbers had entered the home with the intention of burglary but the woman had woken up and tried stopping them. The robbers then locked her in the store room and took away her jewellery.
"Rajkumari Gujral was asleep when two men entered the home by cutting the iron grille of the kitchen. It was when they were escaping that Gujral tried stopping them. They threatened her and, after taking her gold chain and ear rings, locked her in the store room," a senior police officer said. The robbers did not hurt her, the police added.
Gujral's son Mahesh, who is involved in a transport business, and grandson Puru were sleeping in another room, and it was after the robbers had left that she told them about the hold-up at their J Block home.
"The incident took place around 3.30am. Once inside the home, the robbers locked the room in which Mahesh and his son were sleeping. The robbers spent over an hour there," the officer added.
The police said they were questioning residents of the area who had earlier been involved in cases of burglary. "Fingerprint experts have collected samples. The robbers, who seem to be experienced, were not armed," the officer added.
V Renganathan, additional commissioner of police (west), said, "On the basis of the statement given by Mahesh, a case of robbery has been registered. No one has been arrested so far."
