Two Africans were seriously injured after their luxury vehicle had a high-speed collision with a truck carrying iron construction rods on a south Delhi flyover on Sunday night.
Following the crash, two iron rods jutting out of the truck smashed through the vehicle’s front windscreen, punctured the driver’s chest and back before passing through his co-passenger’s right thigh that was resting behind the driver’s seat.
Police said the two have been identified as Adam Ouattara (25) and Cheick (23). “They are both residents of Ivory Coast’s capital city of Yomoussoukro in West Africa and are pursuing academic courses from two different south Delhi institutes,” said a senior police officer.
The accident took place on the Sarita Vihar flyover at 3:30 am when they were on their way to the IGI airport in their Honda City car. “They were descending the flyover when they attempted to overtake the truck from the wrong side. The truck suddenly braked and the car rammed into it from behind,” the officer said.
Police said four Delhi Police PCRs, two CAT ambulances and a team from the National Disaster Management Centre tried to extract the two from the battered vehicle, but couldn’t .
“We finally towed the car to the Trauma Centre where gas cutters and other specialized equipment were used to cut the vehicle and remove the occupants,” the officer added.
Police said medical examination of both the men had revealed that they were not under the influence of alcohol or any other intoxicating substance.
“Ouattara is critical; we have our fingers crossed. The other is stable,” said Dr Sanjeev Bohoi, department of medicine, trauma centre.
