People, who gathered at the Ramlila Maidan in support of Anna Hazare, consumed at least 50 quintals of sweet lime daily during the entire period of the anti-corruption protest.

Sheela Panchal, who along with her family managed a juice stall, said theirs’ was the most popular stall at the venue. On Sunday afternoon, when the flag-waving, “I am Anna” cap-wearing and slogan-shouting supporters left, serpentine queues could be seen at all stalls distributing food, water and juice.

“There is no limit to how much juice people consumed or how much food was cooked here, but I know that 50 quintals of sweet lime were used everyday. That would mean 1.5 lakh glasses of juice daily,” Panchal said. In stead of serving juice, the family resorted to giving out fruits on Sunday as power supply to their stall was snapped by the afternoon.

At ‘Anna ki Rasoi’, around 50,000 plates were used daily. Serving food items like kadhi-chawal, dal, puri, roti and vegetables, those managing the kitchen have no idea about how many people they fed during the past 11 days.

“Around 60,000 people ate here daily. We cooked whatever people gave us. Most of the food came from Khari Baoli in Old Delhi and other nearby areas,” said Mahendra Goel, a businessman from Rohini, who was co-managing the kitchen. The rasoi also prepared kheer for Hazare when he ended his fast.

At a stall of the Jan Sevak Sansthan, Rohtak, the scene was no different. More than 30 cooks worked for 11 days to make sure that no one on the ground went hungry. As many as 12,000 people turned up daily for lunch and dinner and the same number came for breakfast.

“The kitchen was running day and night. People sent so much grocery that we can feed people for 11 more days,” said Swami Paramchetan, a member of the sansthan. After the end of Hazare’s fast, all food stalls were left with large supplies. Even after being asked by the police to wrap up the kitchen, they continued to serve till the ground was vacant.

“We can’t throw away the cooked meal and will continue to serve till there are people to eat it,” said Pawan Kumar, another member of the sansthan.
