To avoid allegations of custodial torture, the Tilak Nagar police station has installed CCTV cameras in its interrogation room -- the first one in Delhi to do so. There is a separate control room from where a team of police officers watches the interrogation and records it.

"Sometimes, criminals reveal things during casual discussions or while sitting alone in the interrogation room and that proves helpful," a senior police officer requesting anonymity said. The initiative is a part of the Delhi Police commissioner's pilot project - one model police station in each district.

"We select one police station from each district and try to make it more people friendly. There has to be a better working environment and people-friendly ambience at model police stations," he said.

Tilak Nagar one such police station in west district. In the interrogation room, a slogan on the wall says, 'Tumhe sach bolna hoga (you have to speak truth)'.

"Apart from the unique interrogation room, the police station has a library for staff, a mess where age old guns have been placed as well as sports facilities," the officer added.

Under the model police station scheme, the commissioner wants the latest technology, a spacious structure, behavioural training for staff, monitoring of investigation, better community outreach and improved satisfaction level.

Another unique feature of this police station is the Samjhauta Park. "We received a lot of complaints of minor dispute among family members. We take both parties to the Samjhauta Park and try to convince them to sort out the matter," he said.

Recently, some people accused of snatching was misleading the police. When left alone in the interrogation room, they accused spill the beans. They were later confronted with video recordings of their chat.
