Hundreds of students crowded Delhi University windows selling and accepting college admission forms.

Hundreds of students crowded Delhi University windows selling and accepting college admission forms on Friday, the last day to deposit them, in a surge not seen since June 1, when the form went on sale. Most counters stayed open till 2 p.m., one hour past closing time, to accept forms.

This year, 1,32,183 forms were sold and 93,000 submitted. The dean students’ welfare office was open till evening selling and receiving forms. “People turned up past closing time. Today, we sold 4,183 forms and received 12,900, many by post,” said S.K. Vij, dean students’ welfare, Delhi University. Hindu College, Miranda House and Indraprastha College, too, kept their counters open long past closing hours.

“We sold forms till 4 p.m.,” said a Hindu College official. Many students peppered the forms with incorrect details as they tried to fill them in a hurry. Students’ groups that had set up helpdesks were seen advising them to fill the form anew. “Since the whole admission process is computerised, no matter how many forms you fill, the information will be collated and filed under one name only,” said Amrita Dhawan, DUSU president.

Centres in South Campus also remained open past 1 p.m. At Gargi College, students looked nervous. Panic-stricken, Pratul Garg was trying to call his mother. “I left my marksheet at home and do not remember all the marks now. I tried calling up my mother but she too has gone to a relative’s home. I don’t have the time to go to Saket and see the marksheet,” he said. Many came to deposit forms for friends.

“I submitted my form on June 10, this is for a neighbour,” said Mayank Sharma. Abid Ali Khan, a Safdarjang Enclave resident, was at the college to submit the form of his niece, a Lucknow resident. “She couriered the form back to me,” he said. The Dean Students’ Welfare office in South Campus, too, saw a huge rush on Friday.

“It was a hectic day. There was quite a rush but everything went off peacefully,” said deputy dean Jogesh Chaddha. Form counters were open much after the closing time, i.e. 1 p.m. “Students come here from far off places and we did not turn anyone away,” she said. The DSW office received 461 forms on the last day and sold 170.
