It was an innocuous call from a PCO in Saurabh Vihar that led to Bunty’s death.
On the run for the past two months and short on cash, Bunty was trying to regroup in south Delhi.
Two days ago, he had called up a local criminal of Dakshinpuri area and wanted to rope him in into his group, Delhi Police said. He was planning to carry out some major strikes in south Delhi and four people were on his radar.
The police said he was planning to kill the two Madangir traders — Naresh Garg and Pawan Garg — whom he had shot at in a robbery bid on July 12. He feared they might recognise him.
A property dealer and one of his old enemies were also on his hit list.
Bunty and his associate Rajesh Sharma had taken shelter in an abandoned godown in Saurabh Vihar area of Badarpur.
“When they found that the godown was vacant, they quietly moved in there on Saturday. They thought no one would come to know about them,” said a senior police officer.
On Saturday, Bunty called up Deepak, a Dakshinpuri-based bootlegger, and asked him to join the gang.
“Deepak’s phone was on surveillance and we traced the number to a PCO in Saurabh Vihar. We questioned the PCO owner and he gave us some details. As the area is densely populated, we went looking for him in every nook and corner of the area,” said a senior police officer.
On Sunday night, the police even picked up two people, including a woman, on the basis of specific information. “We thought that they were associates of Bunty but after grilling them we realised we had caught the wrong people and let them go,” said the officer.
Early on Monday, the police once again received a tip off that Bunty was living in 211/99, H Block Saurabh Vihar.
“A team led by ACP Shibesh Singh and Inspector Vijay Singh raided the godown and asked Bunty and Rajesh to surrender. They opened fire on us, we retaliated and during the encounter, the two were killed,” said HGS Dhaliwal, DCP (south).
The police had earlier arrested Zakir, an active member of Bunty’s gang, on August 1. Bunty had trained Zakir, Mohammad Israel, Om Shiva and Rajesh Sharma the tricks of the trade.
While Zakir has been arrested, Rajesh was killed in an encounter along with him on Monday.
