Guess which car Delhi Police will use to escort players and foreign dignitaries during the Commonwealth Games? The good old Ambassador.
The reason: Delhi Police commandos are trained to ride in Ambassador cars and handle security situations.
Launched in 1948, Ambassadors were the first cars to be manufactured in India.
“The Ambassadors would be used as escort vehicles to provide security to the other vehicles and buses in which players would be ferried,” said Rajan Bhagat, spokesman, Delhi Police.
“It is a good option as almost all the policemen in the security wing are trained and used to travel in these vehicles.”
The police are planning to hire around 1000 Ambassador cars for the Games.
“We have floated a tender to hire around 1000 Ambassador cars for use during the Commonwealth Games,” said a senior police officer.
Almost all the VIPs and politicians prefer to travel in Ambassador cars as they are spacious and comfortable, besides being a status symbol.
“These cars are low floor and have good mobility. During the Games, we would also require to provide security cover to politicians and VIPs and our experience would come handy then,” said the officer.
Not only for escort services, the Ambassadors are being used by Delhi Police’s quick reaction teams (QRTs) during major events.
During the recently concluded Hockey World Cup Match, more than 20 Ambassador cars were used by security agencies as QRTs equipped with weapons and ammunition.
