Vehicular traffic on Delhi’s key arterial roads came to a standstill due to restrictions imposed by Delhi traffic police to facilitate the movement of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and other VIPs on Monday.

The closure of four important Metro stations added to the woes of the commuters who faced problems reaching their workplaces in the morning rush hour.

The traffic police closed Sardar Patel Marg between Panchsheel Marg and Dhaula Kuan for traffic. Sardar Patel Marg is one of city’s busiest roads, connecting West and South Delhi and Gurgaon and IGI Airport with Central Delhi.

The Chinese premier’s movement in the city during the day caused massive traffic jams at Ring Road, Bhairon Marg, Mathura Road and ITO among several other roads in Central and New Delhi areas.

The commuters were advised to avoid roads near India Gate with diversions and barricades, which resulted in long traffic snarls.

Traffic jams were witnessed on roads leading to Connaught Place till afternoon. The Chinese premier’s visit to Rajghat in the morning led to traffic troubles on Vikas Marg, ITO, Ring Road and Mathura Road near Pragati Maidan as well.

Traffic police had to operate several signals in manual mode to facilitate commuters’ movement, said officials.

Metro commuters had a harrowing time as four metro stations — Race Course, Udyog Bhawan, Central Secretariat and Khan Market — were closed on Monday between 8am and 10am.

There will not be any let up in the woes of commuters during the day on Tuesday. According to traffic police, traffic restrictions would continue to remain in place in Central Delhi till noon due to the movement of the Chinese premier.

Traffic would also be hit in the morning and evening hours on some of the arterial roads, near ITO due to VIP movement to Vir Bhoomi near Rajghat.

Today is the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and an IPL match will be played in the evening at Ferozshah Kotla stadium.
