Already engaged in a row over his academic qualification, Aam Aadmi Party MLA Surinder Singh ‘Commando’ landed in another controversy on Monday when an FIR was registered against him at the Tughlaq Road police station.
The AAP MLA has been booked for allegedly making casteist remarks against a New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) sanitary inspector, who belongs to the Scheduled Caste, and obstructing him and other NDMC employees from performing duty.
Surinder Commando, his driver, and an associate have also been accused of allegedly abusing, physically assaulting and threatening the NDMC staff while they were on duty. Investigators have served a notice to the AAP legislator, asking him to join the probe. Police sources said that the MLA from Delhi Cantonment may be arrested.
Sanitary inspector Ram Jeevan Meena had alleged that apart from making casteist remarks against him the AAP MLA and his driver punched ‘beldar’ Mukesh Kumar in his face due to which he suffered serious injuries.
Singh could not be reached for a comment.
Two AAP legislators were recently arrested in different cases while 20 more party MLAs are facing 48 cases registered against them.
As per a complaint by Meena, he along with his team was conducting an anti-encroachment drive near Race Course Road in New Delhi district and removing unauthorised street vendors on Tuesday around 6pm.
Vijay Singh, DCP (New Delhi), quoting Meena’s complaint, said when the NDMC staff was acting against the illegal vendor, Singh reached there and started arguing with them.
“Singh asked the street vendor to leave. When the NDMC staffers protested this, the AAP legislator allegedly made casteist remarks against him and accused the officials of collecting money from street vendors,” said DCP Singh.
“They fled the scene when staff called the police control room,” said an investigating officer. Mukesh was to nearby hospital for medical examination.
“The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came claiming that they are common people but they act as goons. The NDMC official was beaten up for doing his duty. Since Tuesday night Surinder Singh is absconding. If he is not punished then we will hit the streets in protest,” said Karan Singh Tanwar, vice-chairman, NDMC.
Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay said, “We have always said that the Arvind Kejriwal government is anti-Dalit and it has been proved yet again.”
