AAP vs L-G again? Delhi govt moves SC against high court order
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court against a Delhi high court order giving primacy to the Lt Governor (L-G) in Delhi’s governance.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court against a Delhi high court order giving primacy to the Lt Governor (L-G) in Delhi’s governance.
The Delhi government filed a special leave petition (SLP) against the Centre and others, tweeted Delhi government’s Standing Counsel Rahul Mehra.
After the high court verdict on August 4, L-G Najeeb Jung said his office would review all decisions and orders taken by the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government since February 2015.
Jung on Tuesday transferred several officials including the health and PWD secretary who were involved in the work of Mohalla Clinics and construction of classrooms, both pet projects of the Delhi government.
The high court ruled that decisions taken by Delhi’s council of ministers had to be communicated to the L-G, and if he took a different view on the issue, a reference to the central government was required.
Meanwhile, AAP accused Jung and the Centre of “crippling” its government and relegating the city into the “crime capital” of the world with their “abject failure” in the law and order front.
AAP said the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), which puts the number of rape cases in the Capital at 2,199 last year - highest among the union territories - only “vindicates” the party’s stand.
During a press conference, party’s Delhi convener Dilip Pandey also slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought to know whether he was ready to accept the responsibility for Delhi Police’s “dismal performance”.
“Does the Prime Minister sleep peacefully at night despite this scary situation? Has ‘latsaheb’ Jung undertaken any surprise inspection of police stations till date? Have they met any victim of sexual violence till date?” Pandey asked.
