The act of vandalism carried out by the activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at the Arts Faculty of Delhi University (DU) was strongly condemned by students and teachers alike on Friday.

Members of the University Community — an independent group of students and teachers of DU — along with faculty and students of Jamia Millia Islamia University and Jawaharlal Nehru University denounced the violence in shape of a protest march in North Campus. Close to 200 students participated in the demonstration.

The University Community along with students and teachers of other varsities have demanded DU Vice Chancellor Deepak Pental to lodge a police complaint and take administrative action against the culprits.

“The event was held without proper permission from the proctor’s office. However, anybody found indulging in violence would be brought to book,” said DU Proctor Gurmeet Singh.

DUSU president and ABVP member Nupur Sharma, who was present during the protest and is one of the accused, however, claims that she and the party are being misrepresented.

“Neither did the spitting incident happen in front of me nor is that boy an ABVP activist. In fact I was manhandled by JNU students who had absolutely no business being there in the first place,” said Sharma.
