A 48-year-old woman was killed and a man seriously injured on Tuesday when a bus coming from the wrong lane crushed an autorickshaw and hit a car in southwest Delhi’s RK Puram area, police said. The accident occurred around 11 am, near Sangam Cinema in RK Puram Sector 8.
The killed woman was identified as Harbans Kaur, a resident of Vasant Kunj. When the autorickshaw driver saw the chartered bus charging towards them, he jumped out of the moving vehicle, said a police officer. Kaur was crushed to death at the spot, and the auto driver, Shadab (19) is battling for his life at Safdarjung hospital, the officer added.
The bus, which tore down a road divider and got on to the other side, then rammed a Honda Accord car. The driver managed to flee from the spot.
“The impact of the accident was such that the autorickshaw was crushed under the wheels of the bus. Though the driver jumped out in time, the woman died of severe head injuries,” said a police officer.
Kaur’s husband lives in USA and her son Gagandeep Singh works with Nestle in Delhi. The bus belongs to a travel agency in Uttam Nagar. Police said the driver lost control after the brakes failed.
A third victim, Neel, who was in the Honda car, escaped with minor injuries after the air balloon inside his car inflated. A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered at the RK Puram police station.
