A day after the bodies of a five-year-old girl and her mother were found at their Rohini house, the outer district police have arrested a 25-year-old man for the murders. He had worked with the girl’s father as his part-time accountant for some time.
Police claim that robbery was the prime motive behind the murders. The arrested man has been identified as Nadeem, a resident of Wazirpur jhuggi.
BS Jaiswal, deputy commissioner of police (outer), said that Nadeem first killed the girl, Sofiya, because she had seen him stealing Rs. 1.25 lakh and her mother’s mobile phone.
“Fearing that she might tell her mother, Nadeem gagged her and slit her throat with a knife. He then waited for her mother Yasmin, who was in the bathroom when he killed the girl,” said Jaiswal.
“As soon as Yasmin came out, Nadeem strangled her with a wire and slit her throat. To make sure that she was dead, he set her body on fire. Later he fled with R1.25 lakh and Yasmin’s mobile phone,” added Jaiswal.
Nadeem was arrested after the victims’ neighbours reported that he had been seen outside their house a few hours before the murders were discovered. “Since Nadeem had made an unexpected visit, we suspected his involvement and apprehended him for questioning. Initially, he pleaded innocence but on sustained interrogation, he broke down and confessed to the crime,” said a senior investigating officer.
Nadeem disclosed that he used to visit the house when he was working with Yasmin’s husband Aslam Ali. He badly needed the money and knew that Aslam, a small-time builder, always kept some cash at home.
“He went to the victims’ house when the mother-daughter duo was alone in the house. He was stealing the cash when the five-year-old unfortunately saw him and paid with her life,” added the officer.
