Vice-President Mohammed Hamid Ansari has said mere theorising was not enough to protect the interests of the minorities. Their rights need to be protected through an activist approach.

Conferring the Minorities Rights Award 2007 on journalists and activist Javed Anand here on Tuesday, Ansari suggested that the commitments made in the Constitution should be the yardstick to assess the country’s performance in protecting minority rights.

Chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities M Shafi Qureshi said the panel alone will not be able to protect minority rights without help from other sections of society.
