Justice Aftab Alam of the Supreme Court will now head the three-member panel investigating allegations of corruption and misconduct against Justice P.D. Dinakaran, the Rajya Sabha Secretariat announced on Monday.
Justice Alam replaces senior Supreme Court colleague, Justice V.S. Sirpurkar, who had opted out (recused himself) from the panel last week, following questions on his impartiality in the matter.
The probe panel was set-up by Rajya Sabha chairman, Hamid Ansari, in January after 75 opposition MPs had moved a motion to impeach (remove) Justice Dinakaran in December last year.
The other members of the panel are Justice J.S. Khehar, Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court and P.P. Rao, senior advocate of the Supreme Court.
Chennai-based Forum for Judicial Accountability, which has been spearheading a campaign against Justice Dinakaran, had objected to the continuance of Justice Sirpurkar in the panel saying the latter was closely associated with Justice Dinakaran.
Allegations listed against Justice Dinakaran include possessing wealth disproportionate to known sources of income.
