Is Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee emerging as a great divider in Indian politics? It seems so.
After dividing the Congress and the UPA over poll ties and supporting her unorthodox ways, she managed to divide even the CPI(M) central leadership and the Bengal unit on how to stop her before the 2011 assembly polls.
Now, questions are being raised in as regimented an outfit as the CPI (Maoist) whether Banerjee is a friend or a foe. On the train accident at Sainthia in Birbhum district of Bengal on July 19, killing 63 passengers, the rebels were virtually split vertically.
While the outfit’s spokesperson Vikram, went for her jugular, the old warhorse, Maoist central committee member Kishenji, aka Koteswar Rao, is still on the same page with her. Accusing Mamata’s policies for the accident Vikram said in a statement: “You have been burdening the employees with extra workload. Passenger safety is at stake ever since you took over as Railway Minister.”
He also questioned Banerjee’s capability as a minister and accused her of trying to privatise the railways through public-private partnerships.
But Kishenji blamed the Left party for the accident. Kishenji even alleged that the CPI(M) through its railway union, was trying to sabotage the railway services to malign Banerjee.
In an open letter to the railway minister, he said, “The CPI(M) bosses are desperate to attack the railways as it is a soft target to reduce you to an incompetent minister before the people and pass the buck on to the Maoists.”
