Taking their confrontation with the Air India (AI) management and the aviation ministry to the next level, striking AI pilots have decided to start an indefinite hunger-strike from Sunday.

To start with, eight pilots will begin the protest fast at Jantar Mantar. These pilots will be replaced by other pilots as and when their condition deteriorates. A similar protest would be launched at Azad Maidan in Mumbai on Monday.

Around 450 AI pilots have been on mass sick leave since May 7.

AI has terminated the services of 101 of them and has threatened to sack the rest too. The strike, which has disrupted the airline’s international operations and has been declared illegal by the Delhi high court, has led to a loss of around Rs 500 crore so far.
