He was a cop and a stenographer
Profession: Gautam owns a playschool, which his son manages. Gautam worked with the Delhi Police as a constable, after which he joined the Home Ministry as a stenographer. He quit in 1993 to join politics.
Education: MA in Hindi from Meerut University.
Political career: He joined the Janata Dal in 1993, fought the Delhi assembly elections that year and lost. Gautam won in the 1998 elections and again in 2003. He has been the Chairman of District Development Committee (East District.) from 2001 to date.
Family: Wife Jagwati is a housewife. They have two daughters and three sons. One of his sons, Harsh, is a member of the Delhi cricket team. Gautam used to be an avid racer. “I have competed successfully at school and college level,” he said. Gautam still walks four kilometres every day.
Cars: Gautam recently sold his Tata Safari and Maruti Zen and bought a second hand Maruti Zen and a Jeep, which he plans to use during campaigning.
