It was a big day for the 600,000-odd population of Dwarka.

With Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit flagging off six swanky new air-conditioned buses on ‘Dwarka Circular Sewa’ route on Tuesday, the residents of Dwarka finally got what they had been fighting for many years — a local transport facility for the sub-city.

Dikshit termed it a “red letter day for the residents of Dwarka” as she also inaugurated DTC’s first bus depot in Sector 8, inducted a fleet of 100 new low-floor buses and inaugurated smart-card based ‘automatic fare collection system’ for the Dwarka Circular Sewa.

The 100 low-floor buses will also run on various routes connecting Dwarka.

In a grand function organised to launch the bus service, attended by over 800 people who were mostly DTC employees and local partyworkers, the residents of Dwarka were conspicuous by their absence.

“We were never informed or invited to the function,” said Rejimon C.K., president, Dwarka Forum, an umbrella organisation of the residents welfare associations of various blocks and sectors of Dwarka.

“Anyways, it was a political show-off. We would not have liked to be associated with.”

To run clock-wise and anti-clockwise, the Dwarka Circular Sewa would connect several sectors of Dwarka, metro stations, offices and schools and colleges.

“We will soon add more buses on this route to provide a good public transport in this sub-city,” Delhi transport minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said.

Residents, however, said there are still some sectors that are left out of the bus route.

“DTC should have included a public representative when it conducted the survey for this bus route. Sectors like 13 and 14, which are densely populated, are not touched by this bus service,” said Yashpal Sharma, vice president, Pocket 3, Sector 19 RWA.

Residents also complained that the DTC did not create any awareness among the residents about the launch of this service.

“Let them (DTC) run this service for 15 days. We will try and use this service to the maximum. After 15 days, we will collect feedback from the residents and approach the DTC with our suggestions so that maximum number of people are benefited,” said Rejimon.
