Driving on Delhi’s roads continues to be fraught with danger. A visitor to the city found out the hard way on Thursday night when he was assaulted by three bikers and stabbed by one of them in Tilak Nagar. One of the attackers is a minor.
Varun Oberoi, 30, an executive with a private firm in Navi Mumbai, was visiting his in-laws in the west Delhi area with his wife Pranavi. “Oberoi and Pranavi were driving to Amritsar Pan Bhandar in C1 block from her 4B residence when a biker, later ascertained to be a minor riding a Yamaha motorcycle, overtook them from the right near a red signal at 11pm,” said a senior police officer.
Taken aback by the biker’s sudden appearance, the police said, Oberoi brought his Ford Ikon to an abrupt halt, causing the biker to lose his balance and fall. Oberoi then allegedly got out of his vehicle to help the man, picking him up and asking him whether he was hurt. At this time, the biker’s friends pulled up near the spot.
“They were on another motorcycle and started abusing Oberoi. The argument soon turned into a scuffle between the four men. One of the bikers produced a knife from his pocket and attacked Oberoi,” the officer said.
The attacker stabbed Oberoi in the stomach and the three men fled. Oberoi was rushed to the Mata Chanan Devi hospital nearby where he is recuperating from massive blood loss and a broken rib.
Two of the attackers have been caught. “One of the men, identified as Dinesh Singh, and the juvenile are in police custody. The third perpetrator, Vikrant, is absconding. He will be nabbed soon,” said V Renganathan, additional commissioner of police (west).
