Chief election commissioner (CEC) SY Quraishi is hoping that Anna Hazare’s plan to hit the streets for electoral reforms will push the government to fast-track changes.

The Gandhian, the CEC told the Hindustan Times, was right in calling for poll reforms.

"There is large-scale electoral corruption. Role of criminals and money-power is rampant," Quraishi, the man tasked to ensure that none of these come into play during polls, conceded.http://www.hindustantimes.com/images/HTPopups/120411/13_04_pg1b.jpg

Changes in law to keep undesirable elements out of poll process have been with the government for almost 18 years.

Can Hazare push the government to act? Quraishi said: "We only hope that the added urgency in the light of recent events will bring the reforms before Parliament."

Law ministry since last year has initiated national consultation on electoral reforms.

Scrapping the result in case of none-of-the-above option polling most votes — as demanded by Hazare — would be futile, he said. Recall option, too, might not work.

He backed Hazare’s demand for changes in law to debar criminals from polls.
