A newly-wed woman was found dead inside her house in west Delhi’s Baljeet Nagar on Thursday. Her head was smashed with a brick— a gruesome murder that rekindled rumours of a serial killer being on the loose in the area.

The police have detained two men, who they suspect murdered the woman for personal reasons. Rejecting the serial killer theory, Robin Hibu, Deputy Commissioner of Police, West, said there were eyewitnesses who saw the alleged killer fleeing.

Sangeeta Gupta, 22, was murdered at about 3.45 a.m on Thursday. A brick with bloodstains was found lying next to her, police said. Her mother, Subhawati Devi, had gone to fill water in the morning. “I returned and went to Sangeeta’s room. She was lying down. Then I saw a lean man, in his early 20s, staring at her. I switched on the light and the man sprang to his feet, pushed me aside and ran away,” Subhawati said.

Including the one on Thursday, four murders have been reported from this area in the last one month. In each of these cases, the victims were women and were hit on the head with a blunt object. So, fear and tension has gripped the area.

The police said these incidents should not be linked. “We recently arrested two people who had killed their relative — a young girl — with a tawa to make it look like the handiwork of the non-existent serial killer,” said Hibu.
