Are we a litterate city?

Littering is an offence in Delhi. And the penalty for it is the price of one McVeggie burger — without extra cheese. The Rs 50 fine that you are liable to pay for littering was fixed in 1957. No wonder, it does not pinch most Delhiites at today’s income levels.

On the enforcement side also, the civic authorities are litterbug-friendly. This year, they have prosecuted only 3,824 offenders. From the pictures above it should be clear that many more litterbugs can be found in Connaught Place alone, in a day.

“The proposal to enhance the amount of fines and penalties to serve as deterrent to litterbugs was sent to the Delhi government about five years ago, but has not been approved,” said Deep Mathur, spokesperson for Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Relax, litter-ally.
