The December 16 gang rape and the ensuing ripple effects in the Capital shook Somesh Singh, a sculpture teacher at Model School on Barakhamba Road, so much that he created two works of art dedicating them to the braveheart.
However, Singh is not alone as four others, all under the banner of V-11 artists, have come together in a bid to voice their dissent against the current grim situation in the city through artistic creations. These works are on display at the United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan on Lodhi Road.
Organised by the centre, this month-long exhibition, titled ‘The Future We Want… A Safer World’, spells out the message loud and clear: Stop violence against women! Give them the respect they deserve!
One of Singh’s works, Crucifixion, shows a woman’s blue body inside a coffin and she with her eyes closed is pointing at her stomach, which has been ripped open and there are surgical tools inside. “This is a direct commentary of the braveheart, who not only fought her attackers but battled with death for around two weeks,” the artist said.
According to Kiran Mehra-Kerpelman, director of the United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan, this is just an effort to create a much-needed awareness. “This is our own little way of doing something as everything starts on a micro level,” the director said.
All the works on display have this common anger, which was reflected on the streets of the Capital in the ensuing protests. “I am angry that even today we are talking about gender equality. Through these works I am saying that this place is mine and I am going to do whatever it takes to reclaim my space,” one of the artists, Seema Pandey said. Pandey’s use of bright colours to portray a landscape --- in her Me, Myself and My Space series --- where a girl roams free is noteworthy.
Other works on display at the exhibition, which will continue till March 31, are Jyoti Singh’s Glorified and Meditating self, Giri Raj Singh Sansanwal’s My Space, Sajal Patra’s Ma and Somesh Singh’s Body a Temple.
