Ending his indefinite fast against inflated power and water bills in Delhi on the 15th day, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday announced to reduce tariff by half for 24X7 power and water up to 20 kilolitre free for all domestic connections "when AAP comes to power in November".

"Moreover, there would be a system of 'Jal Swaraj' in all Delhi localities where people themselves collect water bills and themselves carry out water management," Kejriwal said from his camp site at Sundar Nagari in northeast Delhi.

Explaining the rationale behind the free 20 kl water for all connections, he said it would about Rs. 460 crore, "which can easily be compensated by cancelling the fraudulent contract worth Rs. 519 crore allotted to a private company for water distribution in Malviya Nagar. Or, as AAP had already said there is a Rs. 3500 crore scam at the Nangloi project."

Except for really rich people, all others' arrears would be waived off till November, when AAP comes to power, he promised.

Criticising that (chief minister) Sheila Dikshit and discoms have always claimed that her government was able to bring 24X7 power only because of privatisation, but the truth is otherwise, he said. "Power production went up across the country and power availability for Delhi increased and hence we could get 24X7 power. When AAP comes to power, I promise we would still give you 24X7 power but at half the rate."

The AAP had also claimed that it had collected 10 lakh plus letters from across Delhi against the inflated power and water bills. "We would take these to Jantar Mantar on April 28. At least there, Dikshit can send clerks to receive it unlike the last week's episode," he announced.
