Dense fog on Friday hit air, rail and road traffic with visibility dropping to zero early in the morning.

More than 100 flights were delayed from one to four hours at the IGI Airport on Friday. Though there were no flight diversions, six flights were cancelled and 29 rescheduled. The situation, however, was better than Thursday when more than 250 flights were hit and the airport witnessed massive chaos.

Early on Friday, fog started to descend at the airport around 1.30 am, reducing visibility to zero. Morning flights were hit badly and there were limited operations till 9.30 am. Low visibility conditions prevailed at the airport for almost 12 hours.

Some flights were operated using the CAT-III B ILS. “There were only three CAT III flights between 6 am and 9.30 am,” said an airport official.

Though many international flights leaving at night and early morning were affected, there were no flight diversions on Friday. Emirates has rescheduled all its flights to Dubai from Delhi till January 25. Unlike Thursday, Delhi’s airspace wasn’t closed for Republic Day fly-past rehearsals on Friday.

The Met Department has forecast dense fog on Saturday morning too. Visibility at IGI airport is expected to remain below 50 metres till 10.30 am, followed by shallow fog.

“There is 100 per cent humidity in the atmosphere and fog conditions are expected to continue for the next five-six days,” said a met department official. “Dense fog conditions will continue till January 27. There will be some respite on Sunday as there is a western disturbance approaching the city but the fog will again intensify after that,” said R.K. Jenamani, Director-in-charge, IGIA met unit.

There was a slight increase in the temperature with the minimum recorded at 7.4 degree Celsius. The maximum temperature was recorded at 18.7 degree Celsius.
