Asha Kiran to have better medical care

Concerned with the sudden spurt in deaths of inmates at Asha Kiran, a government-run home for the mentally-challenged in Rohini, Delhi Urban Development Minister Dr. A.K.Walia and Social Welfare Minister Mangat Ram Singhal recommended turning it into a mini hospital.

Accepting lack of facilities and lapse in proper care of inmates, the two ministers also recommended increase in the number of aayas from 36 to 240, to manage the 730 inmates in the observatory home.

The capacity of the home is 350. Dr Walia and Singhal conducted a joint visit after one more death was reported from Asha Kiran on Monday.

According to reports, 26 deaths have been reported from Asha Kiran in the past five months.

“We will soon improve the infrastructure, appoint more medical staff to ensure proper care of the inmates,” Dr. Walia told reporters.

The ministers also recommended that the Home should have adequate medical facilities for inmates.
