A large number of students who have applied for Delhi University courses through a newly introduced online facility on Day One of the admission season are likely also to buy and submit the over-the-counter forms, experts feel.
“Many students who have registered online are making trips to colleges and post offices to collect forms. They want to be doubly sure that their applications are accepted,” said a teacher coordinator at Miranda House.
The new online system will take some time to catch on, university officials feel.
“Since the facility is not proven yet, we expect students to fill in the over-the-counter form as well,” said a senior university official.
More than 18,000 students registered using the online system on the first day of form sales. At least 7,500 of them completed all requirements and submitted the forms.
“While I have submitted an online form, I wanted to make sure that I don’t miss out and am filling the paper form as well. I can’t rely on the computer for such a big decision of my life,” said Abhishek Khanna, who had come to the New Delhi GPO for fill in his form.
While this duplication will not harm the students in any way other than costing them double, it may hamper the calculations of the university.
“This duplication may result in the number of applications being considerable higher than the number of applicants. The students should ideally opt for just one method but we are a country where proof on paper is considered more significant than proof in your email inbox,” the official added.
Those students who applied online, however, were happy with the system.
“While there were times that the server worked slowly, especially at the time of submitting the fees, the system was quite efficient. I think the varsity has taken a big step forward with its online registrations,” said Swati Misra, an aspirant who lives in Kanpur and wants to pursue political science at the university.
According to university officials, the online procedure remained glitch free throughout the day. “Everything went off smoothly and we are sure it will remain so,” said JM Khurana, dean of student welfare.
