It was a scene right out of a Wild West movie. A man walked into the upscale HUDA Sector 14, Gurgaon, carrying a country-made revolver in each hand, opened fire at a gardener, and fled, leaving his target bleeding profusely. The injured man is now in hospital, stable but still serious, police said.
The assailant left behind the weapons, live cartridges and a bag, and a wave of panic. Children who were playing at a mere 100 metres from the shooting site are terrified since. The police claim to have identified the attacker as one Rajinder Singh. The motive is said to be personal enmity with the victim, Bachchan Singh. According to eyewitnesses, Bachchan was talking to his wife around 3.30 pm, when Rajinder entered the colony from a gate near House No 1004 and shot him near the right shoulder and the back. Some bystanders tried to chase down the assailant but he managed the slip. A resident rushed Bachchan to a hospital nearby.
The police have found the two bullet shells and a live cartridge outside the gate, besides the revolvers and the bag the assailant left behind. ACP Sumer Singh said, “It should be easy to nab Rajinder Singh; he is on our list.” Residents are furious. “Only a few days back there was a burglary in a house here. Such incidents are becoming too frequent,” a resident fumed.
