A 28-year-old Australian woman was allegedly molested in the Capital on Tuesday. The police said a young man allegedly offered lift to the woman and her husband and then tried to molest her.
The incident took place on Monday night and the accused, who was later identified as Ravi Chawla, was arrested on Tuesday. The victim knew her perpetrator, who is a tailor by profession. So she did not hesitate when he said he will give him a lift,” said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity, as he was not authorised to speak the media.
The woman, along with her husband, came to India and had gone to Chawla’s tailoring shop on Mandir Marg on March 21. Chawla invited the couple for dinner at a restaurant near India Gate. The couple are software engineers.
“While having dinner, the woman felt tired and wanted to go back to the hotel. Her husband then tried to get a radio taxi. However, Chawla offered to take her to the hotel while her husband stayed back,” added the officer.
On the way, the complainant claimed Chawla molested her to which she objected and asked him to drop her back at the restaurant. At first he pretended that he did not know the route back to hotel. However, he later dropped her at the restaurant. The complainant then approached the police following which a case was registered and Chawla was arrested.
