Authentic European at a neighbourhood deli

When I entered the newly-opened Smoke House Deli in Khan Market, I felt as if I had stepped into a café in Europe, thanks to the sketches adorning the pristine white walls that are reminiscent of a quaint French eatery. Light bites and grilled delicacies are the highlight of this restaurant, a popular hub for many young politicians.

I started with the grilled chicken lemongrass coriander skewers, which seemed pleasantly succulent to sink my teeth into. Next arrived the Egg Chimay, boiled eggs stuffed with creamy cheese that was soothing to the palate. The Caesar salad with smoked prawns tasted good too. However, I wish they cooked the prawns a tad more, considering the Indian palate that doesn’t really support raw tastes much, especially when it comes to seafood and meat. It’s unfair to leave a European cafe without tasting its pasta.

So quite predictably, I went for the roast garlic and plum tomato fettuccini pasta for the main course, along with the Peri Peri rubbed smoked chicken. The latter stole the show with its fiery flavours, and the chicken grilled to perfection. For fish lovers, the chilli crusted cobbler with Thyme Veloute could be a good choice, not great though, considering it was overtly garnished, too creamy and saucy. To wrap up my meal, I opted for the Tiramisu, and well, I didn’t have to repent. Overall, a good dining experience, and good value for money at R1,800 for a meal for two.
