Finding an auto-rickshaw going in the direction you want to go is all set to get easier.
The transport department has given its nod for the creation of different zones for auto-rickshaws and colour-code them accordingly. So while auto-rickshaws can carry passengers to any part of the city during the day time, they will not be allowed to refuse any passenger to the zone they belong to after evening.
“After the sun sets, auto-rickshaw drivers often insist on going to a particular direction or area where they live. Once these vehicles are colour coded, the passengers will know which auto-rickshaw is going in their direction. Strict action will be taken against auto-rickshaw drivers for refusing to carry passengers to the zone they belong,” Delhi transport minister Ramakant Goswami said.
Goswami said the traffic police have proposed to create six zones and give them different colours. “The modalities will be decided in a meeting on the 18th of this month,” Goswami said.
To ensure the passengers are not harassed and they feel safe in the city, Goswami said the transport department has also decided to evolve a mechanism whereby harassed commuters report any incident through the emergency buttons provided in the auto-rickshaws. Though auto-rickshaws have a panic button, most of the times they do not work.
“Once the passenger presses the button, a message would be flashed to the DIMTS operated control room at ISBT and the police control room would also be alerted,” the minister added.
