The wife of IPS officer Narendra Kumar Singh, who was killed for taking on illegal mining mafia in Madhya Pradesh early March, delivered a baby boy in Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on Monday morning.

Kumar's wife Madhurani Tewatia, an IAS officer of 2000 batch, who is posted in Gwalior was on maternity leave and was staying at her house in Aligarh when Singh was crushed under wheels of a tractor driven allegedly by a member of the mining mafia in Madhya Pradesh on March 8.

“She (Tewatia) has delivered a baby boy at 10.30 am yesterday. It was a Caesarean delivery. The boy is healthy and all fine. She was to deliver this coming Thursday but then it happened early,” said Dr TS Siddhu, medical superintendent at RML hospital.

Meanwhile, the family which is torn between joy and grief waited all day outside the maternity ward at the hospital on Tuesday.

“It’s a very emotional moment for the family. My daughter is inside, the child is inside and we are happy that they are both doing well but what is lost is lost. We are still to recover from our loss,” said S P Singh, Tewatia’s father who works for the Delhi Police.

“Our baby is our hope. It gives us a reason to live on,” said Keshav Dev, SP Singh’s father.

The family has still not decided on any name for the newborn. “It is a little early to decide. We will all decide once the baby is home,” said Dev.
