An unpleasant surprise awaited retired IPS Officer RK Sharma and his wife after their return from a vacation in the US.
Their gold ornaments, worth approximately Rs 5 lakh, were missing from their State Bank of India locker from the bank’s Sector 26, Noida branch.
The loss, which was discovered on August 28, has left them in a state of shock.
“When we returned, we were stunned to find our locker cleaned of jewellery, barring minor items,” said R.K. Sharma.
The couple suspects foul play on part of the bank.
“When we were allotted the locker in February 2007, we found that the particular locker No. 1,143 did not have the provision of an extra hasp where we could put our padlock. The staff told us that the provision of the extra padlock was no longer available in new lockers to prevent people from putting their pad-locks on wrong lockers,” said Dr. Sharma.
Before leaving for US, RK Sharma notified the chief manager, Gurmeena Marwah, as well as the manager (relationships) of the bank that they would be away for around five months.
“When I complained, Marwah advised us to check our residence. We went home to check, but did not find anything,” he added.
The couple decided to go to the bank to check whether anyone had operated their locker in the past months by forging signatures, but the bank had no records.
The bank could not be contacted for comment.
