The habit of not allowing a tenant to stay for more than three months made her Bangladeshi tenant suspect that his landlady Shokat Begum, 62, had huge money and jewellery in her possession.
After vacating the rented accommodation, the tenant, Md Anwar, along with his two friends planned to kill Begum and grab her assets. He carried out the crime on the intervening night of March 15-16 this year, but got nothing except Rs 3,000 and some security bonds from the house.
After evading the law for more than seven months, Anwar was apprehended by the Lodhi Colony police on Tuesday.
DCP (south) Chhaya Sharma said the arrest came following information about the movement of Anwar in south Delhi . “Initially,Anwar did not confess his involvement in the murder, but eventually broke down. Efforts are being made to nab his associates Md Shokat and Babul, who are at large,” she said. The three had strangled Begum at her house in Hauz Qazi.
Being the only surviving member of her family which owned properties across the city, an official said, Begum always feared that her properties would be forcibly grabbed.
