Tired of being called the dirtiest of Delhi's three municipal corporations, the East Civic body has decided to award sanitation workers to encourage them at work. The corporation has announced that in the run-up to the festive season, workers have been asked to roll up their sleeves to pick up awards, such as the cleanest ward, the most beautiful park, the most well-managed ward and the best zone.
An initiative by corporation commissioner SS Yadav, inspection of the wards has already started. "The initiative aims to encourage sanitation workers and gardeners to clean up and beautify their areas. Based on their job, workers will be awarded," said a senior official of East Corporation.
To ensure that the plan is put to action, the civic body has appointed 16 officials to oversee the drive. Entrusted with four wards, each official will take a stock of the work daily. Officials of different ranks, such as inspectors and additional commissioners will mark the employees. When the festive season starts on October 22, marks will be tallied and the workers will be awarded at a function.
A first of its kind, such a drive is expected to become a regular affair. "If the award ceremony works, we will hold them in the future too," added the official.
The corporation has also identified 700 points of broken roads under its jurisdiction and has ordered immediate repair work. These roads are located in Preet Vihar, IP Extension, Nirman Vihar, Laxmi Nagar, Krishna Nagar and Pandav Nagar. Work has already started in some areas.
