Retired IPS officer Kiran Bedi who joined the BJP last week has been provided heavy police security ahead of the assembly elections. Bedi, named the BJP’s CM candidate, was on Wednesday provided Y-plus security.
The police headquarters verbally passed on the order to the security unit after the BJP proposed the former top cop’s name as their chief minister nominee. Sources said she had been provided a security escort vehicle with armed commandos of Delhi police. Apart from the commandos, she has been given personal security officers. The PSOs will be stationed at her residence in south Delhi round the clock.
Sources said that after she was declared the chief ministerial candidate on Monday night, the south district police stationed beat officials at her Uday Park residence in south Delhi.
With supporters, mediapersons and locals thronging her residence, the beat officials are making several rounds outside her house. “The beat constables have been ordered to manage the crowd whenever Bedi is at home, meeting her supporters. They will keep an eye on the crowd and ensure there is no chaos that breaks into a law and order problem,” said a police officer.
Police stations across the capital city have been told to provide armed local police personnel at all her rallies.
Apart from Kiran Bedi, the police have provided security to Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal.
Special commissioner of police (security) SBK Singh refused to comment on the category of security provided to Bedi but said it is “adequate”.
There are five categories of security the police provide on receiving inputs of specific threat to VIPs. They are X,Y, Y-plus, Z and Z-plus depending on the threat assessment of the person.
X category security has only a few police personnel posed as PSOs while Z plus is the highest level of security that could comprise at least 100 police personnel.
