Jodhpur's missing auxiliary nurse Bhanwari Devi was allegedly murdered after her abduction on September 1, according to a revelation made to the CBI by a key suspect in her abduction case.
"Shahabuddin, who was arrested by the CBI last month, told the agency Bhanwari, 36, was murdered after her abduction," said a CBI source. The CBI, however, is yet to gather corroborative evidence about her whereabouts or the alleged murder, said the source.
"The CBI will add murder charges to the FIR only when it is established that Bhanwari was indeed killed," said the source. "Our probe is progressing in the right direction and we are likely to make significant arrests within a week."
Shahabuddin had surrendered before a Jodhpur court on October 22. The CBI suspects, Shahabuddin, and co-accused Sahiram Bishnoi, who is absconding, allegedly abducted Bhanwari at the behest of somebody else.
The CBI had recently grilled sacked Rajasthan minister Mahipal Maderna and Luni legislator Malkhan Singh Bishnoi. Maderna allegedly admitted to a sexual relationship with the missing nurse but had denied any role in her abduction.
In Jodhpur, meanwhile, the CBI filed its second status report in a sealed envelope on Thursday. The CBI requested the bench of Justice Govind Mathur and Justice NK Jain for a private hearing, which was granted. The court has set December 15 as the next date of hearing.
